Fort Story Beach - The two lighthouses at Cape Henry are located on the military base at Fort Story near the north end of Virginia Beach.
Although the original Cape Henry Lighthouse is the 4th oldest lighthouse in the country, it was the first city chartered by the US government in 1792. In fact, it was the first federal project to be expanded by President George Washington after the Rebellion. war : i.e. for the original contract amount of $15,200 (an additional $2,500 was needed to complete the lighthouse). In 1881, a newer city was built thirty feet from the original.

The original Cape Henry Lighthouse was acquired by Virgin Conservation in 1930 and the cladding and iron stairs on the inner side were added in 1867. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on January 29, 1964. In 2002 the American Society of Civil Engineers designated it a Lighthouse. as an Engineering National Historic Landmark. The original and newer lighthouses were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 and 2002, respectively. The original lighthouse is open to the public and a clear view of the coast can be seen from the 360 degree lighthouse.
