Fort Story Campground - Our next time at camp is a few weeks away. I only had one weekend so didn't travel too far. It ended up being a nightmare trip, even though it had nothing to do with the camping itself. I left early in the morning to go camping. It's easier to get a good site earlier in the day. When Brad got home from get off work, we loaded up the car and left. The website is nice and has a fire pit, I've found that not all campgrounds have fire pits (????) so I'll try to mention when they do.
This was probably one of our most memorable trips, but it wasn't actually a good thing. Our dog, Sadie, is still recovering from pancreatitis and an unexplained allergic reaction that nearly killed her. We considered canceling the trip but decided she was growing up and we weren't going to hike this time so she could rest at home at the campsite. The first night we were there, Brad said to me, "What do you think this is?" while looking into Sadie's ear.

Her skin peeled off like a sunburn. Luckily our wonderful vet gave us her mobile number so we gave her a call and sent her pictures and it was determined that her skin was peeling off and it was hives and hives from an allergic reaction measles. Horrible and a little gross, but totally normal - yuck! So, we went to bed, looking forward to a great camping trip.
False Cape State Park
We were sitting outside after breakfast, enjoying the weather, talking, when suddenly I felt a tingling pain in my leg. I thought it was sweat bees or something, but didn't think much of it. However, it started to itch, and then I saw a strange looking fly. I looked it up online and it's what's called a yellowfly. Well, apparently I'm sensitive to yellow fly bites, and my legs have started to swell.
This ruined my trip. I was terrified to go back in there and we're pretty sure Sadie was bitten too because she was acting so scared she didn't even want to go out. My legs looked like this the next morning:
Poor Brad left camp alone because I couldn't walk. He felt like he was about to explode. All in all, the campsite was nice (you can't do anything about nature and its bugs) and we hope to return sometime before or after yellow fly season. Maybe our next trip will be more interesting (prayers). For most of us, 2020 has been the year of "staycation" as we postpone non-essential travel in response to the coronavirus pandemic. While sitting around a dinner table for a smolle is not the same as doing a smolle around a campfire, many of us make the most of the situation and even enjoy a closer relationship with our family.
This year, the introduction of a COVID-19 vaccine gave us hope that travel and vacations could return to their former glory, after all outdoor activities, social distancing, some of the safest places to visit. Campgrounds and RV parks at military installations have been an incredible asset and a not-so-secret getaway for active duty military members and their families across the country. Most military FamCamps and RV parks are much less expensive than comparable resorts in every area. Additionally, depending on the site, certain Veterans and DOD employees may use the Services. While we're now looking for ways to enjoy some fresh air on a budget, these campgrounds and RV sites are a better deal.
